Year in Review, Year Ahead: Strengthening Minnesota’s Early Childhood System —Together

Shot of a group of children sitting in class.

As we reflect on the past year and look ahead to what’s possible, I want to begin by acknowledging the weight of the past few months. Our early care and education communities have navigated uncertainty, public scrutiny, policy shifts, and the very real personal impact these challenges have had on families, educators, and programs. Many in our field have carried a dual responsibility of caring for their own families and neighbors while steadfastly continuing to care for young children, sustain their programs, or provide valuable support to early childhood programs. That is no small task.

It is precisely because of this reality that I begin with deep gratitude. Gratitude for our staff, our partners, and the collective commitment that continues to work towards strengthening Minnesota’s early childhood care and education system, even in moments that test our resilience. Your leadership, compassion, and perseverance are not just sustaining this system; they are shaping its future.

Honoring the Work and Impact of 2025

2025 was marked by meaningful progress across our program areas, driven by the expertise, dedication, and persistence of our teams. These accomplishments were achieved through thoughtful leadership, strong collaboration, and a shared belief that families and providers across Minnesota deserve access to high-quality, equitable child care.

This work did not happen in isolation. Our ongoing collaboration with Minnesota’s 13 Child Care Resource & Referral agencies and Minnesota Tribal Resources for Early Childhood Care (MNTRECC) remains central to our impact. Through these trusted relationships, we extend our reach across the state—supporting providers, strengthening local systems, and advancing shared solutions rooted in community needs.

Leading with Belief in Transformative Change

I lead with an unwavering commitment to advancing transformative, equitable outcomes for Minnesota’s children and families. I also understand the present reality—one where a vital child care industry is facing division and skepticism, despite being a foundational support for many Minnesota families. This can challenge our belief in a better future.

And still, I believe.

I believe because every idea we pursue, every decision we make, and every step we take must be rooted in the conviction that transformation is not only possible, but necessary and achievable. Systems do not change by accident; they change when people choose belief over fear and action over complacency.

What’s Ahead in 2026

As we move into the year ahead, my vision begins with grounding us firmly in who we are as an organization, understanding our unique footprint across Minnesota’s early childhood landscape and the distinct role we play in strengthening systems statewide.

We do this by holding deep appreciation for our history, the leaders who came before us, and the trust we have earned over time. That history is not something we move away from. It is something we carry forward informing, not constraining the future we are building.

At the same time, grounding ourselves requires honesty about the present and courage about the future. It calls us to name, without hesitation, our commitment to equity, racial justice, and systems change. Disparities in access, affordability, and quality are not accidental; they are the result of long-standing policies and structures that demand intentional disruption.

From this place of clarity, honoring where we have been while naming what must change, we bravely welcome the opportunity to boldly create a future where early childhood systems are more just, more inclusive, and more accountable to the families and providers most impacted by inequity.

With belief as our foundation and equity as our compass, this is our moment to lead, guided by purpose and committed to transforming what is possible for Minnesota’s children and families.
